Passenger on the Pearl by Winifred Conkling

I had never heard the story of the Pearl.  I love the format of the book.  It is the story of Emily Edmonson and her family.  Interwoven between their story are blocks of facts about slavery. Emily and her sister, Mary, are part of a family of fourteen children.  The oldest four sisters were able to buy their freedoms, but the younger four brothers and the girls were hired out by their master until they tried to escape on the Pearl and upon being captured were sent back and forth from the north to south and back.

For history readers, this is a very informative book.  I am giving Passenger on the Pearl- the True Story of Emily Edmonson’s Flight from Slavery by Winifred Conkling five stars.  This book of struggle, determination and perseverance is a must read for anyone interested in history.
