The Queen of the Tearling by Erkia Johansen

I was not sure what to expect when I began reading The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. I thought the girl in the beginning was a child, maybe twelve. She is sitting in a tree watching the soldiers go to her parents’ door. Only, they are not her parents, they were her caretakers until her nineteenth birthday when the men come to take her to the castle, as the queen.
She hasn’t been out of the forest and does not have much experience with others, until her journey to take her position, her journey into the strong woman she will become.
I really like her journey, her observations, her questions and her discoveries.  I do NOT however recommend this as a Young Adult book.  It is for more mature readers.
