A Sudden Light is told in narration by Trevor Riddell. The book is written when Trevor is an adult remembering events that occurred to Trevor when he was fourteen. He has come to stay in Riddell house while his father takes care of some things. The premise is to get power of attorney over Trevor’s grandfather, Samuel Riddell, and put him into a home so the family, Jones- Trevor’s father, and Serena, Trevor’s aunt, can sell the house and get rich and be free from the house!
Things are more than they appear. . . Trevor begins the story wanting to reunite his parents. While he is with his father in Seattle, his mother returned back to her family in England. Samuel, while suffering the effects of dementia, hears dancing of his dead wife in the ballroom. No one believes him, until Trevor sees his grandmother dancing. Trevor further finds secret passages and letters from his granduncle Ben and Ben’s boyfriend Harry. His father also begins to talk about his childhood and events that occurred before he was sent away to a boarding school when his mother died when he was sixteen.
I thoroughly loved the story and intend to read more by Garth Stein. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery about family.
I was given the opportunity to read A Sudden Light by Garth Stein- by NetGalley.
